Alexander Scourby
Biography
Alexander Scourby was an American actor and narrator whose deep, resonant voice and Mid-Atlantic accent made him a familiar presence on stage, radio, and screen. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1913, he began acting in high school and later trained at Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre, where he got his first professional role. He made his Broadway debut in Leslie Howard's production of Hamlet in 1936. On film he played the mob boss Mike Lagana in Fritz Lang's The Big Heat (1953), and he appeared in Affair in Trinidad (1952), Giant (1956), Ransom! (1956), The Shaggy Dog (1959), Seven Thieves (1960), and The Devil at 4 O'Clock (1961). He was especially known for recording the entire King James Version of the Bible and 422 audiobooks for the blind, work he considered his most important, and he narrated National Geographic Specials from 1966 to 1985. He died in 1985.
