Plot summary
A Confederate captain leads his escaped men toward the Mexican border during the Civil War while a Union search party rides after them. On the road the fugitives kill a courier carrying word that the war has ended, and the captain keeps that news from his men, pushing on toward Mexico; the Union soldiers on their trail do not know the fighting has stopped either.

- Roger Corman left A Time for Killing partway through shooting and was replaced as director by Phil Karlson, with Columbia giving no reason; Corman's editor Monte Hellman also left the project.
- Van Alexander was given seven weeks to compose 45 minutes of music for the film, but after a disastrous preview screening his score was replaced with a guitar score by Mundell Lowe, despite the producers' enthusiasm.
- A Time for Killing was Harrison Ford's first film with a credited role; although he had no middle name, he was billed as "Harrison J. Ford" to avoid confusion with the silent-film actor Harrison Ford.
- Warren Beatty turned down the lead role of the film but was impressed by Towne's writing, and later hired the writer for uncredited work on Bonnie and Clyde, starting a long collaboration between the two men.
- Cliff Robertson signed to co-star in the film but dropped out and was replaced by George Hamilton, whose fee was a reported $100,000.
