Plot summary

In 1982, a sample of MM88, a virus an American geneticist created by accident that makes any other germ it touches more potent, is recovered from a stolen batch but escapes when the plane carrying it goes down, and the illness it causes spreads worldwide. Within seven months almost no one is left alive. The virus is inactive below minus 10 degrees Celsius, so the polar winter protects the 855 men and eight women at the Antarctic stations. The British submarine HMS Nereid reaches them after sinking a Soviet vessel whose infected crew was trying to come ashore near Palmer Station. The survivors, among them Dr. Shûzô Yoshizumi, try to find a cure and keep their community going.

While shooting Virus, a Swedish cruiser being used to ferry the crew was badly damaged on a coral reef off the Chilean coast and had to be rescued by the Navy.
Producer Haruki Kadokawa put US$13-16 million into Virus, making it the most expensive film in Japanese history on its release.
After Virus failed at the box office, Haruki Kadokawa's company stopped making major films and switched to star vehicles for idols such as Hiroko Yakushimaru, Tomoyo Harada and Noriko Watanabe.
Virus used real navy submarines: the Chilean Navy lent the submarine Simpson (SS-21) as a filming location, and interiors were shot aboard HMCS Okanagan (S74), an Oberon-class Canadian Forces vessel.
