Plot summary
Frank Harris works the desk at a Chicago hotel and dreams of making a fortune in cattle. He has fallen for Maria, the daughter of Señor Vidal, a Mexican cattle baron staying at the hotel. Vidal learns of the courtship, orders Harris to keep away, and prepares to take Maria back to Mexico. Tom Reece, just off a cattle drive, takes over a wing of the hotel and strikes a deal to buy Vidal's herd. A poker game costs Reece his money, and Harris offers his life savings for a half share in the coming drive and a seat on it. Reece accepts. The trail is nothing like the life Harris imagined, and Reece has little patience for an inexperienced partner.
