Biography

Broderick Crawford was an American actor who came out of a vaudeville family and first performed on stage with his parents before turning to vaudeville and radio, including a stretch with the Marx Brothers. A 1932 role in She Loves Me Not in London and a 1937 Broadway turn as Lennie in Of Mice and Men led him to Hollywood, where he made his film debut in Woman Chases Man and was long cast as a fast-talking tough guy or villain. Playing Willie Stark in All the King's Men (1949) brought him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor, and the first half of the 1950s kept him busy in films such as Born Yesterday and Night People. He then starred as Dan Mathews in the police drama Highway Patrol from 1955 to 1959, and a late cameo came in A Little Romance. Crawford died in 1986.

A role that slipped away
Crawford was in Start Cheering at Columbia in 1938, but he did not get to play Lenny again in the movie of Of Mice and Men. Lon Chaney Jr. took that part instead.
