Plot summary
Both engines of a passenger jet fail during takeoff, and Captain Jack Savage puts the aircraft down on what looks like open beach. It skids into a pier and explodes; everyone aboard dies except stewardess Martha Webster. Investigators find that one engine had swallowed a seagull while the other is mechanically sound, and attention settles on pilot error, since Savage had been seen in a bar an hour before the flight. Sam McBane, the airline's director of flight operations and a wartime friend of Savage, refuses that conclusion and presses for a deeper inquiry. Savage's girlfriend Sally Fraser offers McBane the idea of fate, which he rejects.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Fate Is the Hunter (1964)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ernest K. Gann, whose bestselling 1961 memoir gave the film its title, was so disappointed with the result that he asked to have his name removed from the credits, and wrote that he thereby lost the TV residuals from a film that played interminably on television.
- The film's "Blue Ribbon" jet was faked from two DC-7(B) airliners: the wings were reportedly removed and reversed, a Boeing 707 nose cone and "supersonic spike" were added, and the second airframe was used for the beach crash.
- Twentieth Century Fox's back lot was converted into the film's tarmac, taxiway and runway because, reportedly out of fear of litigation, no airframe manufacturer or airline was willing to cooperate with the production.
