Plot summary
Peter Lyncort, a former army man living in Birmingham, is the nearest bomb disposal expert, and when a device turns up on a freight train bound for the dockyard at Portsmouth with a load of naval mines, the authorities send for him. The train is shunted onto a disused siding and the streets around it are cleared. His wife Janine has left him that same evening, planning to take a train to London, but at the station she changes her mind and goes home, where she starts looking for him. Railway constable Charles Baron, who fought the saboteur off in a Birmingham railyard and kept the bag he dropped, believes the man will want to see what his device does and travels to Portsmouth.
