Plot summary
Mining engineer Mike Lambert is out of work, so he takes a temporary job driving a truck. Coming down a steep highway, his brakes fail and he rolls through a small town, denting the pickup of prospector Jeff Cunningham, who wants Mike's employer to pay for the damage. The employer refuses, and Mike pays it himself. The police then arrest him for reckless driving and an expired license, and barmaid Paula Craig settles the fine. She gives up her job, puts him up in a hotel, and reports to Steve Price, vice president of the Empire Bank, that she has found a man of Steve's height and build with no ties in town. Jeff offers Mike a share of a silver mine he has found, and Mike tells Paula about the offer.
