Plot summary
The defenders of the Alamo draw lots to choose one of their number to leave the fort and carry warning to their families. John Stroud is the man picked, and while he is away General Santa Anna's army overruns the mission and kills everyone inside. Because he survived, he is called a coward. He comes back to his own home to find his family dead. He cannot prove his courage or name the turncoats who help the enemy, so he joins Wade, a Santa Anna sympathizer, and his guerrillas, and from inside that band he works to bring a wagon train of refugees through the country to safety.
