Plot summary
The Oklahoma land rush of April 22, 1889 brings fifty thousand settlers onto the prairie, among them Sabra Cravat, who travels with the lawyer she has just married, Yancey Cravat. He seems to know everyone they meet. Along the way he greets his old friend William Hardy, called The Kid, and The Kid's companions Wes Jennings and Hoss Barry, and he brings Tom Wyatt, Sarah Wyatt and their eight children along. When Bob Yountis and Millis, his henchman, attack an Indian family, a crowd cheers them, and Yancey takes the side of Sam Pegler, who edits the Oklahoma Wigwam, against Yountis. Sabra is angry that her husband risked his life, yet she helps the others lift the family's overturned wagon.

- Anne Baxter wrote in her autobiography Intermission that Glenn Ford and Maria Schell began an offscreen romance while making Cimarron, and that Schell had started divorce proceedings in Germany.
- Edna Ferber wrote to The New York Times in March 1961 that she received not one penny from the second film of her novel Cimarron, and could not stop the motion-picture company from using her name in advertising that implied she had written the picture.
- Dust storms during the location shoot led producer Edmund Grainger to move Cimarron onto the studio backlot, despite director Anthony Mann's insistence on filming entirely on location.
- Anthony Mann walked off Cimarron during production, and director Charles Walters finished the film without receiving any screen credit for it.
- One month after MGM announced Cimarron would be its second film shot in the MGM Camera 65 process, following Raintree Country, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson were considered to star.
- The Oklahoma Land Rush sequence was shot in Arizona with over 1,000 extras, 700 horses and 500 wagons and buggies.
