Plot summary
In a small Mexican town, a doctor named Reuben lives alone at his clinic with his dog and declines to treat the pregnant Maria, who may need a Caesarean section. Pancho, Maria's husband, works on a nearby construction crew, where his co-worker Fortunato complains that his cat is behaving strangely. The cat turns on Reuben's dog, and the dog then bites Reuben. A supply truck delivers women to the town to entertain the workers, and one of them, Perla, takes an interest in Reuben, who rebuffs her. Fortunato is carried in delirious, restrained and foaming at the mouth, and Reuben concludes the man has rabies. Counting back to the dog's bite, Reuben works out that the disease is in him and that only two days remain to reach a hospital.
