Biography

Rita Hayworth was an American actress and dancer who became one of the top stars of Hollywood's Golden Age. Born Margarita Carmen Cansino in New York City to dancing parents, she trained from childhood and entered pictures in minor, exotic roles, among them Charlie Chan in Egypt (1935). Columbia's Harry Cohn signed her, renamed her, and built her up, giving her an important role in Only Angels Have Wings (1939). She became known for musicals and dramas including Cover Girl (1944) with Gene Kelly, Gilda (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), and Separate Tables (1958). Fred Astaire, her co-star in You'll Never Get Rich (1941) and You Were Never Lovelier (1942), called her his favorite dance partner. Later credits included Pal Joey (1957) and Circus World (1964), which brought her a Golden Globe nomination. In 1960 she received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and the American Film Institute later ranked her among the top 25 female stars.

First role
The Winter Garden Theatre hosted the Broadway production of The Greenwich Village Follies, and Hayworth appeared in it as one of the Four Cansinos before she turned five.
First role
Hayworth danced in the Spencer Tracy film Dante's Inferno, then signed a contract in February 1935. Her first speaking part came in Under the Pampas Moon, playing an Argentinian girl.
A role that slipped away
In 1943, Hayworth was suspended without pay for nine weeks. The reason was that she would not appear in Once Upon a Time.
Own stunts
Hayworth was skilled in ballet, tap, ballroom and Spanish routines, and Cohn kept showcasing her dancing. Columbia put her in the Technicolor movies Tonight and Every Night (1945) and Down to Earth (1947).
