Plot summary
Andy Stannard, the son of wealthy executive Dave Stannard and his wife Edith, is at school when the principal telephones: a nurse from the family doctor's office has taken Andy away over an infection. The doctor says he sent no one, so Dave telephones the police. Chief Jim Backett mounts a search and installs a second line at the house to keep the main one clear. Reporter Charlie Telfer arrives and stays despite Dave's hostility. The kidnapper calls, demands $500,000 and tells Dave to signal that he will pay by having a television host wear a white jacket the next evening. Dave's brother Al helps gather the money, and the following day Dave takes the cash onto that broadcast and says he will not pay, offering it as a reward.
