Evelyn Keyes
Biography
Evelyn Keyes was an American film actress who began as a chorus girl and was signed by Cecil B. DeMille to a personal contract. Born in Port Arthur, Texas, and raised in Atlanta, she took dancing lessons as a teenager and performed for local clubs. After several B movies at Paramount, she tried out for Scarlett O'Hara, lost that part, but was cast by David O. Selznick as Suellen in Gone with the Wind (1939), her best-known role. At Columbia Pictures she took the ingenue role in Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) and played leads in the studio's B dramas and mysteries. She was the female lead alongside Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946), appeared in The Mating of Millie (1948) with Glenn Ford, and called the film noir The Prowler (1951), opposite Van Heflin, her finest work. Her last major film part came with The Seven Year Itch (1955), and she retired in 1956 but kept acting.
