Plot summary
A fistfight leaves one man dead, and Joe Hufford is charged with the killing. District attorney George Knowland accepts that Hufford meant no one to die, and he offers Hufford's lawyer a line of defense. The lawyer will not hear it, and Hufford goes to prison for manslaughter. Some years into the sentence, Knowland takes the post of warden at that prison, and he gives Hufford the job of driving him and his daughter Kay around town. Kay becomes Hufford's strongest advocate.
