Plot summary
A newspaper reports that Floyd Buckley, a well-known explorer and writer, says he has found where the Lost Dutchman gold mine lies. Barry Storm, who believes the mine belongs to his family because the Dutchman was his grandfather, follows him into Arizona's Superstition Mountains. Buckley is shot there by an unseen gunman, the fourth such killing lately. Storm tells Sheriff Early and deputy Ray Covin what happened, and Covin recounts the mine's history: a century ago Pedro Peralta hid twenty million dollars in gold, and the Apaches killed him for defiling ground holy to their thunder god. In 1880, Jacob Walz and his friend Wiser hear a man called Ludi address his companion as Peralta and follow the pair into the mountains.
