Plot summary
Chris Emery sings and dances at a nightclub in Trinidad. One night after her performance, Inspector Smythe and Anderson of the American consulate bring her the news that her husband Neil is dead. A pistol found at the scene makes the police call it suicide at first, but they come to believe he was murdered, and that his boat was seen near the property of Max Fabian, a friend who offers Chris comfort. The police say Fabian grew rich by selling information and aiding treason, and that Neil may have died over a plan to let Nazis fire rockets from Trinidad at the United States. Chris agrees to use Fabian's feelings for her to gather what the police need. Neil's brother Steve arrives in Trinidad expecting the job his brother had written to him about.
