Plot summary
John Parrish came west to recover from a wound on his lung, and he has a name for riding unarmed and staying clear of trouble. Now that his health is restored, he intends to sell his land and go back east with Caroline Vail, the woman he has been engaged to. Then he sees Wade Matlock, one of Anchor Ranch's men, gun down the sheriff in town. Lew Wilkison, head of Anchor Ranch, owns nearly the whole valley, is crippled, and resents the farm settlers crowding the range. He puts a low offer to Parrish and gives him twenty-four hours to answer. One of Parrish's hands, the son of a settler, is killed by Wade, and Parrish's men want to ride into town for revenge.
