Biography

Stella Stevens was an American actress who began her screen career in 1959 with a minor role in the musical Say One for Me, a performance that won her a Golden Globe Award as new star of the year. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, she studied at Memphis State University before signing a studio contract. She went on to star opposite Elvis Presley in Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962) and Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor (1963), and appeared in The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963), The Silencers (1966), and How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life (1968). Sam Peckinpah's The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970) brought positive reviews, and she played Linda Rogo in the disaster film The Poseidon Adventure (1972). On television she had regular roles on Flamingo Road and Santa Barbara, and she later directed The Ranch (1989). Stevens died in 2023.

Stella Stevens first appeared on film in the 1959 musical Say One for Me, a modest production starring and produced by Bing Crosby, where she played a chorus girl in a small part.
Behind the camera
Stevens directed the feature film The Ranch in 1989, and she both produced and directed The American Heroine in 1979.

Stevens took part in stage work, among them a touring all-female staging of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, where she was cast as Oscar Madison alongside Sandy Dennis.
