Plot summary

The town of Headstone has lost its last four sheriffs to the outlaw Killer Pete and his gang, who have robbed it repeatedly. Tex Miller arrives as the next sheriff and shares the stagecoach with Belinda Pendergast, a former seminary student on her way to her uncle Jim. When a band of Indians attacks the stage, Bill, as she is known, fires back and explains that her father, who had wanted a son, taught her to shoot. Killer Pete's gang then robs the Crystal Palace saloon. Judge Harmon gives Jim a letter from his late brother Joe asking him to look after Bill, and Jim has Bill appointed sheriff until the stage comes in, only to find his new sheriff is a girl. Bill shocks the townswomen by moving into rooms above the saloon.
