Plot summary
Joe Miracle has $100,000 from the safe of his San Francisco nightclub and wants out of the country. He returns from the war to find that gangster Barney Teener has taken over the club and that his partner Leo is missing and presumed murdered. Leo's brother Victor and Victor's wife Clara have bought him a passage, but the ship sails on Christmas Eve, two days away, so he needs somewhere to hide. When police arrive at Victor's apartment to quiet a disturbance, Joe pretends to be Victor and spends the night safely in jail. Jenny Jones, a social worker who earlier visited the apartment over reported domestic trouble, has him remanded into her custody instead and brings him to the Borden Street Settlement House.
