Plot summary
Colonel Pete Moore runs the Whitney Radar Test Group at Whitney Air Force Base, and its aircraft keep reporting electrical trouble. To track down the cause, he puts a four-man crew aboard Flight 412 under Captain Roy Bishop, with Lieutenant Tony Podryski, Captain Cliff Riggs and Lieutenant Ferguson along. Early in the test the jet registers three blips on radar, and two fighters sent up to look into them disappear. A military intelligence outfit known by the call sign Digger Control orders Flight 412 to land at a remote, abandoned desert airfield, where the crew is held for an eighteen-hour debriefing meant to convince them they saw no flying saucer, and the aircraft is hidden away in a hangar. Moore, kept in the dark, begins looking for his men with help from Major Mike Dunning.
