Plot summary
Millie McGonigle is assistant personnel director at a large department store. Riding home, she watches the driver, Doug Andrews, quit his bus in frustration and hands him her card. The next day she learns that Tommy Bassett, a boy she likes, has been left without parents: his mother died in a traffic accident and his father was killed in World War II, so the child goes to a foundling home. Millie, an orphan herself, decides to adopt him. Ralph Galloway, who runs the home, says only married women may adopt, so she invents a fiancé in Alaska and gets sixty days to produce him. Doug comes to the store seeking work; a confirmed bachelor, he offers to help her land a spouse.
