Plot summary
In 1871, a group of convicts breaks out of a Carson City prison and crosses the mountains. Five reach Lake Monte Diablo: Jim Canfield, Johnny Greer, Edward "Limey" Cockerell, Anderson and Clyde Maxwell. Eight women live at the settlement while their men are away prospecting, and Granny is the eldest among them. The women permit the strangers to use an empty cabin and then hide their guns once they realize the men are escaped convicts. Canfield insists he is innocent of the killing that sent him to prison, and the other convicts believe he came back for $40,000 in hidden money. He is drawn to Marcia, one of the women. The other four convicts keep plotting.
