Plot summary
In the 1880s Arizona Territory, Dan Evans is a struggling rancher. He and his two sons witness a gang under the outlaw Ben Wade hold up a Butterfield stagecoach, and see Wade shoot the driver and the man the driver had overpowered. Wade's men ride south toward the Mexican border. In Bisbee, Evans distracts Wade long enough for the marshal to take him from behind, and Wade's second-in-command, Charlie Prince, escapes on horseback. The marshal needs men to carry Wade to Contention City to catch the 3:10 train to Yuma, and Butterfield offers two hundred dollars to any volunteer. Dan and Alex Potter agree to go, and Wade is taken to Dan's ranch, where his wife, Alice, learns of the decision.
