Plot summary
Jason Sweet, a gambler, wins a herd of sheep in a card game and ships the animals by rail into cattle country, where he means to graze them on the open range. The townspeople object, and he will not be moved. He picks a fight with Jumbo McCall, the roughest man around, beats him, and proves just as expert with a gun. Dell Payton cannot make sense of him, yet she is drawn to him, as he is to her. She is engaged to Colonel Stephen Bedford, the local cattle baron, who has the town behind him, and Sweet's presence troubles him.
