Plot summary
Jim Ed Love is the rancher Ben Jones and Howdy Lewis work for most often, and the bargains he offers tend to favor him. After the two cowboys bring in the horses they have tamed and spend a winter gathering stray cattle, he settles part of their pay with a plain roan. The horse will not let Ben stay on it, and he refuses to have it turned into soap or dog food. He sees a way to earn more: other cowhands will bet money that they cannot ride the animal. On the road the pair stop to help Mary and Sister, two women stranded with a broken-down car, and drive them toward a garage.
