Plot summary
Owen Devereaux, a Union colonel, has his regiment fire on a Confederate detachment that only he can see is signaling surrender with a white flag. The war ends that same day. During the celebration, Sergeant Jericho Howard is arrested for drinking while on duty. Devereaux is appointed federal judge for the region, and Caroline Emmett agrees to marry him. On the bench, he hears soldiers who marched off to war and came home to find their mines taken over; the businessman Ed Carter argues that the law gives him those claims, and Devereaux rules in Carter's favor. Del Stewart, Devereaux's closest friend and a captain, takes the post of marshal and stays near him as his behavior grows more erratic.

- Charles Vidor sued Columbia Pictures to get out of his contract and lost; studio head Harry Cohn then assigned him to direct The Man from Colorado as punishment, since star Glenn Ford had given evidence against Vidor at the trial.
- Vidor was alleged to have shot scenes slowly: Columbia said the film was thirteen days behind after 22 days of filming, while Vidor claimed his 60-day schedule had been cut to 48. He was removed in March 1947 and replaced by Henry Levin.
- Producer Jules Schermer, who made The Man from Colorado for Columbia Pictures, would also quit the studio after the movie.
