Biography

Harry Morgan was an American actor whose film and television career spanned six decades. Born in Detroit and raised in Muskegon, Michigan, he began acting on stage in 1937 with the Group Theatre in New York, appearing in the original production of Clifford Odets's Golden Boy. His screen debut came in 1942, and he went on to supporting roles in more than 100 films, among them The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), The Big Clock (1948), High Noon (1952), The Glenn Miller Story (1954), Inherit the Wind (1960), and The Shootist (1976). On television he played Pete Porter in December Bride and Pete and Gladys, Officer Bill Gannon in Dragnet from 1967 to 1970, and Colonel Sherman T. Potter in MASH from 1975 to 1983, a part he reprised in AfterMASH. He won an Emmy Award in 1980 and later played Captain Gannon in Dragnet (1987).

    Morgan first appeared on screen as "Henry Morgan" in the 1942 movie To the Shores of Tripoli. His name later became "Henry 'Harry' Morgan" and then Harry Morgan, so people would not confuse him with a popular humorist of that name.

  2. Early training

    In 1937 Morgan started acting on stage using his birth name, and he joined the Group Theatre in New York City. He was in the original production of Clifford Odets' Golden Boy.

  3. Behind the award

    Morgan won an Emmy Award in 1980 for his performance on M*A*S*H, and when asked if the show's cast had made him a better actor, he said it had made him a better human being.
