Plot summary

Elliott Nash writes and sometimes directs a live television crime series in New York, and he is more anxious than usual. A man named Shelby contacts him with a claim: he holds provocative photographs of Elliott's wife, Nell Nash, taken when she was younger, and he demands $25,000 to keep them quiet. Elliott does not tell Nell, who is starring in a Broadway musical, and he tries to raise the money through his work and by selling their suburban house. Nell refuses to sell, so Elliott rigs small failures around the house to convince her it is falling apart. When Nell buys an antique gazebo for the backyard, Elliott settles on a plan to lure Shelby to the house and bury him under the gazebo's concrete foundation, timed to the night contractor Sam Thorpe pours it.
