Rip Torn
Biography
Rip Torn was an American actor whose career in film, television, and theater lasted roughly sixty years. Born in Temple, Texas, he studied acting at the University of Texas and then at the Actors Studio in New York. After his film debut in Baby Doll (1956), he appeared in the original Broadway production of Sweet Bird of Youth, winning a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Cross Creek (1983). Torn played Judas in King of Kings (1961) and later took roles in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and The Beastmaster (1982). He voiced Zeus in Hercules (1997) and portrayed Zed in Men in Black (1997) and its 2002 sequel. His television work as Artie on The Larry Sanders Show from 1992 to 1998 brought six Emmy nominations and one win. He also directed the 1988 film The Telephone.

Rip Torn was cast as George Hanson in Easy Rider, a part Terry Southern wrote for him, but he withdrew after a bitter argument with co-director Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson took the role instead.
Behind the award
Torn was the only actor on The Larry Sanders Show to win an Emmy Award for his work, taking the prize in 1996 after six straight nominations as Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
