Harry Dean Stanton

Biography

Harry Dean Stanton was an American actor and musician whose career spanned over six decades, much of it in supporting roles. Raised in Kentucky, he performed at the University of Kentucky's Guignol Theatre, studied at the Pasadena Playhouse, and first appeared on screen in the 1957 Western Tomahawk Trail, later using the name Dean Stanton. His breakthrough was the lead in Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas (1984). His films included Cool Hand Luke (1967), Kelly's Heroes (1970), Alien (1979), Escape from New York (1981), Christine (1983), Repo Man (1984), Pretty in Pink (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), The Green Mile (1999), Alpha Dog (2006), Inland Empire (2006), Rango (2011) and Seven Psychopaths (2012). He starred in Lucky (2017) and played Roman Grant on the HBO series Big Love. He also sang and played guitar and harmonica.

Early in his career, Stanton used the professional name Dean Stanton so audiences would not confuse him with the actor Harry Stanton.
Early training
Stanton studied at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California. Tyler MacDuff and Dana Andrews were among his classmates there, and both were his friends.
Beyond film
Stanton played harmonica on The Call's 1989 album Let the Day Begin, one of several musical collaborations during his career.
