Biography
Alfre Woodard is an American actress and producer who began in theater and became known for strong-willed, dignified roles on stage and screen. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she studied drama at Boston University before breaking through Off-Broadway in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Her early film work included Remember My Name (1978) and Cross Creek (1983), which brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She won four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and earned a BAFTA nomination for Clemency (2019). Among her films are Grand Canyon (1991), Passion Fish (1992), Heart and Souls (1993), Crooklyn (1994), Primal Fear (1996), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Down in the Delta (1998), and Juanita (2019). She voiced Sarabi in The Lion King (2019) and appeared on television in St. Elsewhere, L.A. Law, Miss Evers' Boys, Desperate Housewives, and Luke Cage.
