Plot summary
Major Harry Cargill is accused of treason. While he and his unit were prisoners in a North Korean camp, he signed a germ-warfare confession and made anti-American broadcasts on the radio, and he admits it. Colonel William Edwards is assigned to the case, and his superiors want it moved to court-martial. Cargill brings forward evidence of what he did but refuses to defend himself, and the survivors of the camp give an identical, rehearsed account of the deaths of two soldiers just before his collaboration began. The commander, General Connors, has a personal stake: Captain Joe Connors, his son, was among the dead, and he presses for a court-martial. Edwards will not accept the easy explanation.
