Plot summary
Alan James is a music producer in Memphis, a man much older than Laura, whom he met while she worked as a translator at a music conference in Moscow. They live with their three-year-old son, Sam, in a mansion on the Mississippi, and although Laura lives in comfort, she feels alone. Alan's grown son Michael, a literature professor in Los Angeles, has long been at odds with his father. Michael comes to Memphis for his first visit in years, and he and Laura, strangers until now, wait together when Alan is late for lunch. Michael accuses Laura of coming home with another man the night before, then apologizes, blaming his anger on trouble in his own marriage, and the two begin to talk.
