Plot summary
Marie Antoinette is the youngest daughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. In 1770 she travels to France and marries Louis-Auguste, the Dauphin, at Versailles, sealing an alliance between the two countries. The court presses the couple for an heir, but the Dauphin shows little interest, and the king is told the marriage has not been consummated. Marie Antoinette finds the etiquette of the French court hard to bear, and courtiers treat her as a foreigner. She befriends the Princesse Lamballe and the Duchesse de Polignac and refuses to speak to Madame du Barry, the king's mistress. Her mother writes to advise her on the marriage. Isolated, she fills her days with gambling and lavish clothing.

- Count Axel von Fersen's look in the film was modeled on 1980s rock singer Adam Ant, and the real pastry house Laduree made the on-screen macarons for a scene between Marie Antoinette and Ambassador Mercy.
- Milena Canonero and six assistant designers created the gowns, hats, suits and prop costume pieces, employing ten rental houses and seven wardrobe transport drivers. Shoes were made by Manolo Blahnik, and hundreds of wigs and hair pieces by Rocchetti & Rocchetti.
- The soundtrack sets new wave and post-punk bands including New Order, Gang of Four, the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Bow Wow Wow against period music by Francois Couperin, Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Philippe Rameau and Domenico Scarlatti.
- Director Sofia Coppola said her visual style for the film was shaped by Stanley Kubrick, Terrence Malick and Milos Forman, as well as by Ken Russell's Lisztomania.
