In 1928, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings tells her husband that a publisher has rejected her book, that she is leaving him, and that she is bound for the orange grove she has bought at Cross Creek, Florida. She drives there alone, and her car gives out in the nearest town, where Norton Baskin takes her the last stretch to a run-down cabin and an overgrown grove. She decides to stay and begins fixing the place up. Geechee offers to work for her for little pay, Marsh Turner and his daughter Ellie bring their pet fawn Flag around, and editors and local residents bother her.
