Plot summary
Jane married into money and is psychologically fragile, while her sister Laura is more grounded but has her hands full with responsibilities at home. The two come back to the childhood house to help their father Joe, who is crude but endearing and whose health and mind are giving out. Being there brings difficult and often comic situations. The rooms, their late mother's belongings and Joe's odd habits bring back memories, most of all for Jane. The sisters disagree about how serious Joe's condition is. They also have to deal with his romantic involvement with Shelly, a nurse as eccentric as he is.
