Plot summary
In 1718, Thomas and Devon Mainwaring and their two sons come to Bull Island, a small uninhabited island off the Carolina coast. The family has recently been freed from indenture and has inherited the island. One son is their own, and the other they bought as a baby. The family is poor. Fishermen who had already been using the island believe it belongs to them. When the Mainwarings arrive, the fishermen try to force them to leave, and a dispute over the island begins.
