Carl Benton Reid

Biography

Carl Benton Reid was an American actor who performed for seven years in leading roles at the Cleveland Play House before achieving fame on Broadway in 1939 as Oscar Hubbard, one of the greedy brothers in The Little Foxes, a part he repeated in the 1941 film adaptation, playing opposite Bette Davis. Born in Lansing, Michigan and raised in Battle Creek, he graduated from Carnegie Tech and later appeared on Broadway in works by Shakespeare and in the original staging of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh. His stern, chilly manner led to villainous and unpleasant roles, though he was occasionally cast sympathetically. His films included Pork Chop Hill (1959), in which he played an admiral at Korean War peace talks, and Madame X (1966), his last screen part. On radio he was Roger Allen in Big Sister, and on television he played the spymaster in Amos Burke, Secret Agent and guested four times on Perry Mason.

About the name
When he worked in radio, Reid used his full name professionally because four other people in the business were also named Carl Reid.
Early training
Reid went to Battle Creek High School, graduating in 1912. Starting in 1910, a drama class there taught by Carlos Cole, a newly hired U-M alumnus, sparked his interest in acting.
