Plot summary
In a near future where the Moon is colonized, the XR-2300 shuttle Mayflower One is hurried from Houston into its first commercial flight. The space center's head argues with the commissioner over the craft's pending approval, saying it never met safety rules, while the commissioner cites board pressure to keep the launch on time. Elaine Dickinson, the computer officer, raises doubts about the test results; her fiancé, crew member Simon Kurtz, answers that they came from Ted Striker, her former lover, a test pilot whose credibility ended with a mental breakdown. A lawsuit after a shuttle test flight that crashed put Ted in a hospital for the mentally ill. A newspaper headline about the coming launch convinces him he was put away to keep him quiet about safety issues, and he escapes.
