Dub Taylor

Biography

Dub Taylor was an American character actor who worked in films and television from the 1940s into the 1990s, often in Westerns and comedies. Born in Richmond, Virginia, and raised in Augusta, Georgia, he started as a vaudeville performer, making his film debut in Frank Capra's You Can't Take It with You (1938) as a cheerful ex-football captain who could play tuned percussion. Columbia kept him under contract, and in Taming of the West he began playing comic sidekick Cannonball, a role he continued for ten years in more than 50 films. He later joined Sam Peckinpah's stock company, appearing in Major Dundee (1965) and The Wild Bunch (1969), and he played Ivan Moss in Bonnie and Clyde (1967). He also worked in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and Back to the Future Part III (1990). On television, he was in the syndicated Casey Jones series and spent six seasons on Hee Haw. His last film role was in Maverick (1994).

Did you know?!

  1. First role

Dub Taylor got his first film role in Frank Capra's You Can't Take It with You because the part of Ed Carmichael called for an actor who could play tuned percussion.

  2. A first

Taylor created the comic sidekick Cannonball in the 1939 western Taming of the West and played the character for a decade in more than 50 films.

  3. A role that slipped away

Columbia replaced Taylor as Charles Starrett's sidekick in 1945 with Smiley Burnette, who had just left Republic Pictures, because executives thought Burnette's name value would help the series.

  4. A change of course

Taylor later stopped using the Cannonball name. He felt that the name was holding him back from getting parts in films that had larger budgets.

  5. Own stunts

In the 1950s and early 1960s, Taylor put his xylophone skills to work on several television shows, among them the syndicated series Ranch Party.

  6. A first

Taylor's final film role was a fleeting unnamed Room Clerk in Maverick, yet his name still appears in the film's opening credits.
