Plot summary
Bobby Logan and Ernie Wyatt, border patrol agents, are setting motion sensors in a remote stretch of Texas desert when they uncover a jeep long buried in the sand. In the driver's seat sits an intact skeleton; around it are a toolbox holding $800,000, all in unused ten and twenty dollar bills, and a case with a scoped sniper rifle and matching ammunition. A wallet identifies the driver as Michael J. Curtis of San Antonio, and a slip of paper lists two phone numbers. Logan suspects the cash came from a robbery decades earlier and wants to keep it, while Wyatt holds back. They rebury the jeep, give its license plate to the sheriff's department and ask their girlfriends, telephone operators, to trace the numbers. Tests show the bills were printed between 1962 and 1963.
