Plot summary
Elinor Randall is a widow, and in 1910 she travels with Jerrine, her seven-year-old daughter, to a ranch in a remote part of Wyoming. Clyde Stewart, a reserved Scottish rancher, hired her as his housekeeper. The place is lonely; the only other woman living nearby is Mrs. Landauer, an elderly German widow. Elinor admires the countryside and resolves to file a claim on land of her own, but she has no money to put up a house. Clyde says he will build one if she becomes his wife. The two have little in common and no great warmth between them, yet they agree to marry and work their adjoining homesteads together.
