Biography
Geraldine Page was an American actress who worked in film, theater, and television for four decades. Raised in Chicago after her family left Kirksville, Missouri, she trained at the Goodman School of Drama and in New York with Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg. Her film debut in Hondo (1953) brought an Academy Award nomination, and more followed for Summer and Smoke (1961), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962), You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Interiors (1978), and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). She finally won Best Actress for The Trip to Bountiful (1985). Among her other pictures were What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? (1969), The Beguiled (1971), and the Disney animated film The Rescuers (1977), where she voiced Madame Medusa. She began on Broadway in 1953 and earned four Tony nominations, and she collected two Emmys for television work and two Golden Globes. In 1979 she was added to the American Theater Hall of Fame.

Geraldine Page received her seventh Academy Award nomination for her role in the dark comedy The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). At the time, this set a record for most nominations without a win, tying her with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton.

First role
Page first appeared on the New York stage in Seven Mirrors, a play put together by students from Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles. It had 23 performances at Blackfriars Repertory Theatre.
Early training
After finishing at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1945, Page trained in New York City at the Herbert Berghof School and the American Theatre Wing, where she spent seven years studying with Uta Hagen, and afterward at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg.
Big break
Geraldine Page was cast by director José Quintero in a minor role in Yerma in 1952, which led to her being cast as Alma in Summer and Smoke, a production that brought her significant exposure.
