Biography

Gene Hackman was an American actor whose film career spanned more than four decades. Born in San Bernardino, California, he began pursuing acting in 1956 and trained at the Pasadena Playhouse before moving to New York for off-Broadway and Broadway work. His first credited film role came in Lilith (1964). He earned an Academy Award nomination for Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and won Best Actor for The French Connection (1971). Other notable films included The Conversation (1974), Night Moves (1975), Hoosiers (1986), Mississippi Burning (1988), which brought another Oscar nomination, Crimson Tide (1995), Get Shorty (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), for which he won a Golden Globe. He also played Lex Luthor in several Superman films. He won a second Oscar for Unforgiven (1992). After retiring in 2004, he wrote novels and narrated documentaries.

  1. A role that slipped away

    Hackman was fired from The Graduate three weeks into rehearsal because director Mike Nichols thought he was too young for the role of Mr. Robinson, and Murray Hamilton replaced him.

  2. Early training

    At the Pasadena Playhouse, Hackman and classmate Dustin Hoffman were voted "the least likely to succeed," and Hackman received the lowest score the school had ever given.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Hackman nearly took the role of Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch, but his agent advised him to turn it down for a more promising part, and he did.

  4. Getting ready for a role

    Hackman refused to shave his head and mustache for March or Die, so director Richard Donner tricked him by wearing a fake mustache, challenging Hackman to shave both, then removing the fake one.
