Plot summary
Grady Tripp is a writing professor at a university in Pennsylvania who has published nothing since his first novel, seven years back. His third wife, Emily, has just walked out. He is sleeping with Sara Gaskell, the chancellor, whose husband Walter runs the English department where Grady works. On the weekend of the university's WordFest, Terry Crabtree, Grady's editor, flies in to find out whether any of the long-delayed second novel exists, bringing a companion he met on the flight. At a party at the Gaskells' house, Sara tells Grady she is pregnant. James Leer, one of Grady's students, follows him around for much of the weekend.
