Mildred Dunnock
Biography
Mildred Dunnock was an American stage and screen actress. Born in Baltimore, she became interested in theater at Goucher College and taught English while helping with school plays. She earned praise for playing a Welsh teacher in The Corn is Green while still teaching; her first screen role came in the 1945 film adaptation. She played Linda Loman on stage in the 1940s and reprised the part in the 1951 movie version of Death of a Salesman, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. A second Academy Award nomination came for Baby Doll (1956). A founding member of the Actors Studio, she was the first to play Big Mama on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Later she appeared in The Trouble with Harry (1955). She had a role in Peyton Place (1957). An Emmy nomination followed for the 1966 television adaptation of Death of a Salesman, and her last film was The Pick-up Artist (1987).
