Biography
Powers Boothe was an American actor known for authoritative roles on stage, film, and television. Born in Snyder, Texas, in 1948, he studied at Southwest Texas State University and earned a Master of Fine Arts in drama from Southern Methodist University, then joined the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He made his New York stage debut in a 1974 Lincoln Center production of Richard III and later starred on Broadway in Lone Star. He gained national attention in 1980 as Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones, winning a Primetime Emmy Award. His films included Southern Comfort (1981), Red Dawn (1984), Tombstone (1993), Blue Sky (1994), Nixon (1995), and Sin City (2005), with its sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014). On television he played Cy Tolliver on Deadwood from 2004 to 2006 and Lamar Wyatt on Nashville from 2012 to 2014, and he voiced the character Gorilla Grodd for Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.

Behind the award
Powers Boothe was the only actor to cross the Screen Actors Guild picket lines in the fall of 1980 to accept his Emmy Award for playing Jim Jones, saying it might be the bravest or dumbest moment of his career.
Early training
After he graduated from Southwest Texas State University, Boothe became a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's repertory company, where his parts included Henry IV, Part 2 and Troilus and Cressida.
First role
Boothe first took the New York City stage in a 1974 Lincoln Center production of Richard III. His Broadway debut came five years afterward, when he starred in the one-act play Lone Star.
