Biography

Hank Azaria is an American actor and producer known for voicing many characters on The Simpsons since 1989, among them Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, work that has earned him four Primetime Emmy Awards. Born in Queens, New York City, he made his first theatrically released film appearance in Pretty Woman (1990). He played the television producer Albert Freedman in Quiz Show (1994), and counts The Birdcage (1996), in which he was the housekeeper Agador Spartacus, as his big break. He voiced Bartok the bat in Anastasia (1997), winning an Annie Award, and took the Emmy for his performance as Mitch Albom in the television film Tuesdays with Morrie (1999). He went on to star in Huff and Brockmire, and he played Gargamel in The Smurfs (2011). His Broadway debut came as Lancelot in Spamalot, a role that brought him a Tony nomination.

  1. First role

    Hank Azaria's first voice on The Simpsons was Moe Szyslak, the town bartender, a part he took over from Christopher Collins, who had recorded the character's voice first. Casting director Bonita Pietila, who knew him from Hollywood Dog, called and asked him to audition.

  2. Behind the camera

    The 2004 short film Nobody's Perfect was written and directed by Azaria. It took the Film Discovery Jury Award for Best Short at the US Comedy Arts Festival.

  3. Getting ready for a role

    For his Brockmire character, Azaria drew on veteran sportscasters such as Bob Murphy and Phil Rizzuto for the voice and style. The character first appeared in a Funny or Die web series episode, "A Legend in the Booth," which Azaria co-wrote.
